Sweet Darkness

Sweet Darkness

When your eyes are tired

the world is tired also.

When your vision has gone

no part of the world can find you.

Time to go into the dark

where the night has eyes

to recognize its own.

There you can be sure

you are not beyond love.

The dark will be your womb

tonight.

The night will give you a horizon

further than you can see.

You must learn one thing.

The world was made to be free in.

Give up all the other worlds

except the one to which you belong.

Sometimes it takes darkness and the sweet

confinement of your aloneness

to learn anything or anyone

that does not bring you alive

is too small for you.

    • Dear Ranu,

Thank you for your visit and appreciation of this poem. I like a lot of David Whyte’s poetry.

      All good wishes,

  1. I love the words “the night will give you a horizon further than you can see”… All that we have learned about surviving in the world needs to be unlearned to know our true selves and that horizon which is further than we can see is actually our true selves… Thank you for your thought provoking posts as usual…

    • Greetings,

Thank you for your visit here. I’m glad you found this thought provoking. It struck me that way the first time I met it. It continues to.

      All good wishes,

      robert

  2. Thank you for sharing this very wise poem Robert! I especially needed to hear ‘Give up all the other worlds
except the one to which you belong.’
Too often we split ourselves in to fragments and lose sight of the whole – no?

    • Dear Anjali,

Thank you for your visit and comments! I agree; we do, indeed, lose sight of the whole.

      All good wishes,

      robert
